Mastitis: What Every Mum Needs to Know
Share
I’ve had mastitis a few times, and let me tell you—it is horrible. Not only did it leave me with a low milk supply, but it also made breastfeeding an incredibly difficult and painful experience.
But here’s the silver lining: it was my struggles with mastitis that helped me discover that there are natural ways to both prevent and manage mastitis.
Mastitis is a common part of many mothers’ breastfeeding journeys. It occurs when a milk duct becomes blocked and then infected—and it can escalate quickly if not treated.
Signs & Symptoms of Mastitis
Mastitis often comes on suddenly, so it’s important to act quickly if you notice any of these symptoms:
-
Redness or tenderness in the breast
-
Localised hot spots on the breast
-
Lumps or hard areas
-
Flu-like symptoms such as fever, aches, or chills
How to Help Prevent Mastitis
While mastitis isn’t always preventable, there are natural steps you can take to reduce your risk:
-
Wash your hands before feeding or pumping – bacteria from your hands can enter the milk ducts and cause infection.
-
Check your baby’s attachment – poor latch can damage nipples and increase the chance of infection.
-
Feed regularly – avoid long gaps between feeds. If needed, express or pump to relieve fullness.
-
Choose comfortable clothing and bras – avoid underwires or anything tight that puts pressure on the ducts and restricts blood flow.
Natural Relief for Blocked Ducts
If you suspect a blocked duct (and not yet mastitis), these tips can help relieve pain and support healing:
-
Keep breastfeeding – especially on the affected side, to help drain the breast.
-
Ensure full drainage – lean slightly forward while feeding so gravity helps. If bub stops before you’re empty, hand express or pump.
-
Soothe with cold packs – a frozen wet nappy works wonders for easing pain and inflammation.
-
Change feeding positions – this can help drain different parts of the breast.
-
Hydrate and rest – your body heals best when cared for.
-
Massage gently – even if uncomfortable, gentle massage can help clear the blockage.
When to Seek Medical Help
If your symptoms worsen, you develop a fever, or you suspect the blockage has become an infection, it’s important to seek help promptly. You may need antibiotics to fully clear it.
